We at Fourlane have learned a lot from our customers when it comes to the problems they run into with their QuickBooks files. With our services, we try to help the businesses we work with identify the true issues hiding beneath the surface, and walk away better off then when they came to us. That’s why with this QuickBooks Insight series, we hope you can identify with the experiences other customers have faced. This week we discuss Fourlane QuickBooks Insights – Where is that Internal Supplies Inventory going?
Today’s QuickBooks Insight Tip #14: Tracking the Shop Floor
QuickBooks does not have a feature to do shop floor tracking – as in letting each station know what and when they are to work on and what is coming down the pipe, nor where is this item supposed to go next in the manufacturing process. However, by using Nested Assemblies, you can get away without having to move to a pricier shop floor software.
Product Customization
A customer manufactures custom sports balls – varying logos and words on the ball. They have the process of the base unit down, manufacturing the balls and progressing from each stage. However, they needed help with the custom piece of the process.
Our Solution
The key to deciding to use sales order or assemblies in a custom process is if we are going to do this multiple times or one time. If the balls were a one-time customization – like for an event or seasonal – then we can track the customizations on a sales order.
However, this customer did an initial setup of the project and then would continue to manufacture the balls with that logo in the future. We set up a (3) level nested assembly. The highest level is the finished good. The second level is the logo stitching and polishing. The first or lowest level is the logo sketch and machining setup.
We put a custom field on each assembly with a drop down of who was responsible on the team so the floor manager could track production. Then we built a report that showed pending builds by person and finished builds by person so they could see what was completed and what was coming up.
